Wadsworth Glass Residential Window Services

Vinyl Windows are generally an excellent choice. They are the least expensive, the most common retrofit installs, and won't crack or fade. The drawbacks of vinyl are that they aren't as strong as the other materials and cannot be painted. They generally come in either white or tan. Wood windows are more robust and are better insulators, and they can be painted. Wood is recommended for larger, heavier windows. Over time, wood windows require re-painting so that they won't rot. Aluminum windows are pretty strong and generally relatively cost-effective, but they look like they sound... aluminum. They cannot be painted. Composite windows are constructed from multiple different materials. A common type of composite frame is fiberglass/wood. These windows have the strength of wood but the rot-resistance and long lifespan of vinyl.

Nail-On vs. Retrofit - Which application works best for you?

"Nail-on" or "nail-fin" windows are the same type of windows used in new construction. The studs or frame inside the surrounding siding or stucco must be exposed, and the windows are "nailed on" to these studs, the window frames are weather-sealed, and the siding or stucco is reapplied. Wadsworth can expose these studs/frame components in stucco or siding. In stucco applications, a separate contractor must apply the surrounding stucco after the windows are installed. In municipalities where building permits are required for nail-on windows (this applies to most cities in the bay area), an inspection must be completed before the stucco is reapplied. For wood siding buildings, in many cases, we can install the new windows and nail trim around the window without having to redo the siding. Since this is a much more involved process, labor is much more complicated and time-consuming, increasing costs. Nail-on windows are a great idea if you think the studs or frame inside your walls need to be replaced due to water damage or pest damage., or if you are already replacing your siding or stucco.

Retrofit windows are installed inside of the existing window frames. This is a much more streamlined and straightforward process and therefore much less expensive. That is why retrofit windows are much more widespread than nail-on. The biggest drawback to installing retrofit windows is losing a marginal amount of space to accommodate the new frames. This is more noticeable with smaller windows.
